Liverpool ends 30-year title wait

Liverpool are the new champions of England. This long-awaited victory marks their first title in 30 years, and 19th overall, with this their first in the Premier League era.

It is manager Jurgen Klopp’s third league title to go with the two won in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

The Premier League crown comes thanks to the highest points rate English football has ever seen, with 86 from 31 matches, making them the earliest ever champions in terms of games played.

This title win follows last year’s victories in the Champions League and Club World Cup, emotionally bringing a glittering period for the club to a peak, with the trophy they wanted above all others.

The success also vindicates the entire Fenway Sports Group project, as well as Klopp’s decision to go to Anfield in 2015.

The players had already been uttering the phrase “back on our perch” in the last few days, referencing a famous line by Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United overtook Liverpool’s status as England’s dominant team in the 1990s.

Liverpool are now one off United’s record of 20 titles, and that is the next target for this team, as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1983-84.

Victory was confirmed after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The Covid-19 crisis means Liverpool will not yet be able to celebrate with their jubilant fans, but a parade is planned when it is safe to do so.

Players celebrated together in a team hotel while fans gathered outside Anfield as the emotion of the occasion overflowed on Merseyside.

Manager Klopp says sealing the title was ”more than he ever dreamed of.

“It’s the best thing I can imagine and more than I could have ever dreamed of,” the Reds manager said afterward as he fought back tears of emotion.

“I have no words, it’s unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible, becoming champion with this club is absolutely incredible.”

And delivering a message to fans Klopp added: “It is for you out there. It’s all here (touching his heart) and all here (touching his head). It is a joy to do it for you.”
