One dead after shooting at Breonna Taylor protest park

A man has died after being shot in a park in Kentucky where people had gathered to protest against the death of Breonna Taylor.

The shooting on Saturday night in Louisville also resulted in a second person being taken to hospital with injuries described by police as non-life-threatening.

Video on social media appeared to show a man opening fire as people ran for safety, while later scenes showed at least one person on the ground bleeding.

Police are investigating but no information has been released about arrests or details about the victims.

Tweets from Louisville Metropolitan Police Department said: “Just about 9 pm, there were reports of shots fired in Jefferson Square Park. Calls then came in that Sheriff’s Department personnel were in the park performing life-saving measures on a male who eventually died at the scene.

“A short time later, we got a report of another shooting victim at the Hall of Justice. That person was taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers cleared the park completely and have secured the entire area so homicide detectives can conduct their investigation.”

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said he was “deeply saddened by the violence”.

“It is a tragedy that this area of peaceful protest is now a crime scene,” he added.

Police said they were not expecting to release more information until morning, local time.

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was killed in her Louisville home in March by police executing a no-knock warrant, which allows them to enter a property without announcing their presence.

It was part of a narcotics investigation but no drugs were found at her property.

One of the officers has since been fired.

Protesters have been calling for the officers to face criminal charges.
