Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said that Turkey has not fulfilled its obligations under the agreements “Astana” and “Sochi”, accusing Ankara of supporting the organization “Jabhat al-Nusra”, which controls most of the Idlib area in the north of the country.

In a speech to the UN General Assembly, Muallem said that Idlib has become the largest gathering of foreign terrorists in the world, pointing to Syria’s right and duty to protect its people and liberate the region including terrorism.

At the same time, he stressed that Syria has dealt positively with the initiatives to resolve the situation in Idlib “and has given it more time to implement in the hope that this will contribute to the completion of the elimination of terrorism in it.”

He stressed that Ankara, backed by Western countries, “desires to protect the terrorist organizations in Idlib as they have done in every advance of the Syrian army against terrorism,” adding that the United States and Turkey continue their illegal military presence in northern Syria. It is called a “safe area” inside Syrian territory in violation of the UN Charter.

He stressed that any foreign forces deployed on Syrian territory without the consent of the Syrian state, the occupation forces and that Syria has the right to take the procedures guaranteed under international law to get them out.

He said Ankara must abide by the agreements, withdraw its troops or bear the consequences of its occupation of Syrian territory.
