Manchester City Knocked Out of the Champions League By Lyon

Manchester City was knocked out of the Champions League quarter-final by Lyon, as the French side pulled off a second huge upset in just over a week.

Pep Guardiola’s side was hoping to avoid a shock exit after the French side defeated Juventus in the last 16 and RB Leipzig knocked out Atletico Madrid earlier this week.

However, City found themselves 1-0 down after Maxwell Cornet scored in the 24th minute when he was the first to respond to a brilliant tackle from Aymeric Laporte, as the Premier League side struggled to get going in the first half.

In the second half, Guardiola’s men began to turn up the pressure but Rudi Garcia’s side stood strong for the first 25 minutes.

Eventually, the former Barca man brought Riyad Mahrez on for Fernandinho and moved Kevin de Bruyne into the middle, the change worked as the Belgian equalized with a nice finish in the 69th minute.

Most then expected to City to go on and win the game easily, however the Ligue 1 side, who haven’t qualified for Europe next season after finishing seventh, once again took the lead.

The ball was played to Karl Toko Ekambi on a counter-attack for Lyon. The striker was in an offside position but the forward made no play at the ball, instead of letting it go through his legs.

Moussa Dembele ran onto the ball but the City players were slow to react, as they appealed for offside, and former Celtic man scored, despite Ederson getting a hand on the ball.

Raheem Sterling had the perfect chance to make it 2-2 with four minutes to go but in front of an open net from yards out the winger somehow put the ball over.

That was a huge moment for City as Lyon went up the other end as Dembele scored his second of the night, following up a shot after Ederson made a huge mistake.

There were just 59 seconds between the miss at one end and the decisive third goal at the other end, with Sterling heavily involved in City’s elimination from the competition’s quarter-final for the second year in-a-row, after his goal against Spurs was ruled out for offside last year.

De Bruyne nearly made it 3-2 deep in injury time from a free-kick from an angle but Anthony Lopes was equal to it and tipped the ball over.
