US airlines suffer Omicron-related disruptions over New Year weekend

Thousands of flights within the United States were delayed or canceled over the New Year weekend, adding to the travel disruptions during the holiday week due to adverse weather and rising cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

Nearly 9,230 flights within the United States or entering or departing it were either canceled or delayed on Saturday alone, according to a running tally on flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

By 04:00 am eastern time (09:00 GMT) Sunday, an additional 2,200 flights were either canceled or delayed, according to the website’s figures.

The Christmas holidays are typically a peak time for air travel, but the rapid spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant has led to a sharp increase in COVID-19 infections, forcing airlines to cancel flights as pilots and crew quarantine.
