The Football Association explains the reasons for canceling the Costa Rica friendly and vows to take legal measures

Today, Thursday, the Iraqi Football Association announced the cancellation of the match between our national team and its Costa Rican counterpart, as a result of the latter’s insistence not to play it, indicating that it will take all legal measures that impose a penalty clause on the party that violates the agreement.

A statement by the federation, received by Al-Ghadeer, stated that it “expresses its regret over the events of the match between our national team and its Costa Rican counterpart, which was scheduled to take place at Basra International Stadium (the trunk of the palm) this Thursday afternoon.”

The statement continued, “The federation would like to indicate that it has complied with all the terms of the contract concluded with the Costa Rican side, including providing the necessary facilities to secure the holding of the match and providing all requirements for its holding, and all organizational aspects have been prepared for the match, except that the Costa Rican side strangely and surprisingly insisted not to agree to entry. To the land of Basra by the legal methods followed and an attempt to violate the borders and enter without handing over any data to the Iraqi side, and then categorically refused to play the match with the continuation of attempts, the direct intervention of the State of the Prime Minister, the follow-up of the President of the Federation, the Governor of Basra and the Iraqi ambassador to the State of Kuwait, and overcoming the obstacles To hold the match and provide additional facilities to fly the Costa Rican delegation to Basra, but all attempts were rejected.”

He added, “Based on the foregoing, the match was canceled as a result of the Costa Rican national team’s insistence not to play it, and the Iraqi Federation will take all legal measures that guarantee its right within the terms of the contract and that impose a penalty clause on the party who violates the agreement.”

The statement concluded, “There will be specific instructions to return the tickets for the national team’s match against Costa Rica to the sports public, who purchased the entry ticket to the Palm trunk stadium in Basra Sports City, which will be announced later, noting the need to keep the entry ticket.”
