Fresh Attack Reported on Power Transmission Towers in Iraq

Another bomb attack has been reported in northern Iraq targeting the power transmission towers to cut electricity in the region, a statement said on Saturday.

A statement by the Electricity Transmission Company of Northern Iraq explained that the latest incidents hit five towers of power transmission as well as two transmission lines in the provinces of Nineveh and Kirkuk.

It was not clear who was behind the incident but the statement noted that “the terrorist groups aim to completely cut off the power system in the northern regions,” considering it as a “systematic and aggressive” plan to affect the lives of civilians.

On Friday night, the statement continued, the transmission lines of Qayyarah – Mosul Dam and the East Mosul – Mosul Dam were attacked with explosive devices.

Power transmission towers in Iraq are frequently attacked by unidentified groups, which are suspected to be the jihadists of Islamic State (IS) attempting to further escalate the situation in Iraq as there have been ongoing protests in some cities over the electricity cuts.
